Heron Highlights 7/2

Posted on July 02 2009, 5:17 pm by HeronHighlights
Heron Highlights (7/1) is a weekly column to communicate positive things happening at Brantley County High School.

If you have questions, comments, suggestions or story ideas, please contact Mrs. Cummings at 462-5121 or email amy.cummings@brantley.k12.ga.us. Due to a death in the family, I will be out of town.  You are more than welcome to email me. I will respond when I can. Thank you.

Quote of the Week

"July Fourth means a lot to me as an American, ... It is a patriotic day. It is not particularly about WWII or any war. It just shows a patriotic way of life we really should celebrate not just on Independence Day but every day.”

                                                                                                                         Robert Davies

"Thank-you to all those women and men who have served our country to ensure our freedom. Thank-you to my personal hero, my grandfather, Raymond James Lacey, who passed away in peace last week. The 565 days you spent overseas in WWI in hand -to-hand combat will never be forgotten. I am so proud to be your granddaughter. I could only hope to accomplish in a lifetime of what you did in 5 minutes in WWI. I miss you dearly and am glad I was there with you when you went to see the Angels." - Amy Cummings

buster walker road

Posted on June 30 2009, 9:34 pm by gatorbait
I know its not the only bad road in Brantley but Buster Walker road is in bad need of a road grader. By the time some one gets from one end to the other ,your vehicle is pretty much dismantled ( or at least sounds that way). I know when the fuel prices were up to almost four dollars the county vehicle traffic had slowed up . Fuel is quite a bit lower now so lets get those graders rolling! When they do roll dont be scared to drop that blade and knock down the humps instead of laying dirt between them. Hmmm if a commisioner  moves out there we can get some results.

gator on buster walker

Posted on June 29 2009, 2:19 am by BabyGirl
last nite around 1:45 am we were coming home from
jacksonville, looking at campers all day, and we always get off 95 and come in 110 and turn on road beside church, well as we rounded the curve, it's in front of where they have been building a new house, in the middle of the road there was about an 8 to 9 ft gator headed toward that yard. it was scary! we backed up to see and it went in the ditch and was headed towards i think a culvert. if you live right there, look out for him.

SHERIFF JOE IS AT IT AGAIN!

Posted on June 27 2009, 9:12 pm by kplumley
I got this in an e-mail from my sister the other day.
I wonder if any of these ideas could be implemented here. I think some of them are great ideas, especially the one about the animal shelter.

You all remember Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Arizona , who painted the jail cells pink and made the inmates wear pink prison garb.. Well.........
SHERIFF JOE IS AT IT AGAIN!

Oh, there's MUCH more to know about Sheriff Joe!

Maricopa County was spending approx. $18 million dollars a year on stray animals, like cats and dogs. Sheriff Joe offered to take the department over, and the County Supervisors said okay.

The animal shelters are now all staffed and operated by prisoners. They feed and care for the strays. Every animal in his care is taken out and walked twice daily. He now has prisoners who are experts in animal nutrition and behavior. They give great classes for anyone who'd like to adopt an animal. He has literally taken stray dogs off the street, given them to the care of prisoners, and had them place in dog shows.

The best part? His budget for the entire department is now under $3 million.. Teresa and I adopted a Weimaraner from a Maricopa County shelter two years ago. He was neutered, and current on all shots, in great health, and even had a microchip inserted the day we got him. Cost us $78.

The prisoners get the benefit of about $0.28 an hour for working, but most would work for free, just to be out of their cells for the day. Most of his budget is for utilities, building maintenance, etc. He pays the prisoners out of the fees collected for adopted animals.

I have long wondered when the rest of the country would take a look at the way he runs the jail system, and copy some of his ideas. He has a huge farm, donated to the county years ago, where inmates can work, and they grow most of their own fresh vegetables and food, doing all the work and harvesting by hand.

He has a pretty good sized hog farm, which provides meat, and fertilizer. It fertilizes the Christmas tree nursery, where prisoners work, and you can buy a living Christmas tree for $6 - $8 for the Holidays, and plant it later. We have six trees in our yard from the Prison.

Yup, he was re-elected last year with 83% of the vote.
Now he's in trouble with the ACLU again. He painted all his buses and vehicles with a mural, that has a special hotline phone number painted on it, where you can call and report suspected illegal aliens. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement wasn't doing enough in his eyes, so he had 40 deputies trained specifically for enforcing immigration laws, started up his hotline, and bought 4 new buses just for hauling folks back to the border. He's kind of a 'Git-R Dun' kind of Sheriff.

TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO

HE IS THE MARICOPA ARIZONA COUNTY SHERIFF

AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER
THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY:

Sheriff Joe Arpaio (In Arizona ), who created the 'Tent City Jail':
He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.

He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights. Cut off all but 'G' rated movies.

He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects.

Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination.

He took away cable TV until he found out there wasa Federal Court Order that required cable TV for jails so he hooked up the cable TV again; only let in the Disney Channel and the Weather Channel.

When asked why the Weather Channel he replied, 'So they will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my Chain Gangs.'

He cut off coffee since it has zero nutritional value.

When the inmates complained, he told them 'This isn't the Ritz/Carlton......if you don't like it, don't come back!'

More On The Arizona Sheriff:

With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees just set a new record), the Associated Press reports:
About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed-wire-surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts.

On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 degrees inside the week before.

Many were also swathed in wet, pink towels as sweat collected on their chests and dripped down to their PINK SOCKS.

'It feels like we are in a furnace', said James Zanzot, an inmate who has lived in the TENTS for 1 year. 'It's Inhumane.'

Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic. He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: 'It's 120 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they have to wear full battle gear, but they didn't commit any crimes, so shut your mouths!'

Way to go, Sheriff!

Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders. Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.

House for Sale

Posted on June 23 2009, 9:46 am by One_Mad_Hatter
We think it's between 900 to 1000 sq feet.

The house was built in 1950 to his mother's specifications.

It has a LR, DR, kitchen, 2 bedrooms (one had a fireplace in it), a bathroom & an opened living area off of the kitchen (this use to be the 3rd bedroom).

The inside of the house is tongue-n-groove, knotty pine (even the ceilings).

There is a porch that runs across the front of the house.

The house is no longer needed. It must be moved. We would rather sell it then to see it go down as vacant houses tend to do. It must be seen to be appreciated. If you would like to know anything else just ask. 462-6518

Old photograph repairs

Posted on June 23 2009, 9:06 am by missdixxee
I have a photograph of my husband when he was a baby that has a lot of wear and tear.  It is about a 10 x 16 picture and appears to have had something wet on it at one time.  I have read online about repairs and it can be done, does anyone know how to do this or know anyone that does?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I would like to have it fixed for my husbands 50th birthday in August.

Father's Day

Posted on June 20 2009, 11:31 pm by harmonicaman
I respect people's observance of father's day, but in my case, please respect my wishes to be counted out. Let me explain:
If churches would practice the doctrine they teach on Sunday, the pews would be full. Churches are full of competition and dirty politics. Where in the Bible does it say that to be a Christian, I must live exactly as others do? The Bible does say that it was written by men inspired by God. That I would pay to see. A man inspired by God. Inspired by God and not greed, not popularity, not me me me, not competition, not pride, not anything but God. People could find fault with Elvis Presley, but 2 quotes of his stand out, “Jesus Christ is the only King.”
“There is no God but God.”
I haven’t been to church in several months. In time I’m sure I’ll find one again. There is one big thing that has really hurt me while going to church. No church we’ve ever stepped foot in will ever let us forget that we lost a child and our ensuing infertility. I say it’s none of their business. My mama told me if you scratch a wound, you’ll make it bleed. I hate reliving losing my son over and over again. Tomorrow is father’s day. I won’t be in attendance because I’m made to stand up in front of people like I am a real father. If I return to churchgoing, I will in turn quit altogether if this persists. We have been through 3 different churches in the last 7 years. Every one of them has made me feel like an outcast, like there is something wrong with me because we haven’t had children. I know this could happen in any organization, but I do believe people do this to me because they know it gets to me. It’s like being around a bully at school who picks on the weak. If you show some your weakness, they will exploit it, whether it be in AA, the Elk’s Club, The Rotary club, the town council, or whatever group you make yourself a part of. I don’t go to church to knock other people down and point out their weaknesses. I try my best not to do that outside the church, either. Neither do I condemn you. Just don’t bring up losing a child, infertility, or parade me in front of the congregation like I’m some poster child.

Someone hit and killed a horse

Posted on June 18 2009, 8:59 am by Jibwalker
It happened about 530AM this morning. A black pickup truck hit the horse. It was still laying in the middle of the road 10 mins ago.

Does anyone know who's horse it was? All I could tell was that it was dark brown. At least the legs were, the rest was covered up.

Poor animal. I hope people will stop speeding on Post Road. I am not saying that this driver was speeding, but drivers do speed and this could have been a person.
